The emergency shelter program of EWH provides safety and support to those who have experienced family violence and/or sexual assault, who are in immediate need of housing.
Individuals who are in danger and have nowhere else to go may call our 24-hour hotline and request emergency shelter. If shelter is appropriate, a staff member of EWH will meet the individual or family at the Justice Center, area hospital or police station, if needed.
When individuals and/or families arrive at the shelter, their immediate needs are met. They are shown the facility and are oriented to their new environment. Within 24 hours, residents and their children begin working with a staff counselor and participation in counseling and support groups begin. Residents are encouraged to work, go to school, and seek safe permanent housing and to start on the part toward self-sufficiency.
The shelter program also works to prevent the continuance of the cycle of violence.
