As a survivor of domestic violence and/or sexual assault, you have the right to be treated with dignity and compassion. Since 1978, EWH has been informing survivors of their rights and offering sensitive support.

If you file a police report, there are several things that you need to know:
- The crime is against you and the State of Ohio. Once the prosecutor accepts the case, it becomes the State's case. This means you will be witness for the State. You cannot drop charges. Only the prosecutor or the judge can make that decision.
- You can request a Temporary Protection Order (TPO) at the arraignment. This order makes it a new crime if the abuser comes around you. The TPO will remain in effect only until the disposition of the case. Usually this is at the time of the trial or sentencing.
- You can request a Civil Protection Order (CPO) by petitioning the Civil Court. You do not need to pursue criminal charges to obtain a CPO. A CPO has the same power as a TPO, but it is valid for a period of up to (5) years. Our Domestic Violence Advocate can help you with this order.
